Train Alliance receives €28.7 million in EU funding for the SMARTCargo project

Train Alliance AB has received a substantial EU grant of €28.7 million for the implementation of its SMARTCargo project. This project is designed to enhance the capacity and efficiency of Sweden’s rail network as part of the European TEN-T network. SMARTCargo aims to contribute to a greener and more sustainable transport sector by enabling a shift from road transport to rail, which is estimated to reduce CO₂ emissions by over 11,000 tons per year.

The total project budget is €94.8 million, of which the EU grant covers 30 percent. The remaining funding will come from Train Alliance’s own resources, with additional external financing if needed.

SMARTCargo Project Establishment in Sigtuna
The SMARTCargo project will commence at Train Alliance’s site in Sigtuna and is scheduled to run over three years. According to the EU grant terms, the project must be completed by December 31, 2027, and achieve the capacity increases specified in the application.

Enhanced Capacity for the Future of Rail
Train Alliance is focused on creating modern and efficient railway facilities that strengthen the capacity and functionality of the rail system. SMARTCargo will also be implemented at other strategic locations across Sweden to address bottlenecks and improve functionality within the TEN-T network.
